A Lagos coroner has dismissed foul play in the tragic death of Nigerian music star Mohbad (Ilerioluwa Aloba) but revealed that medical negligence by an auxiliary nurse played a critical role.

Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, speaking at the Ikorodu Magistrate Court, affirmed that while there was no evidence of homicide, the singer’s sudden demise was directly connected to an injection administered by the nurse—without a doctor’s prescription. This action, she described, was “unlawful and professionally negligent”.

Based on the inquest findings and expert testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi recommended that Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse, face criminal charges under Sections 29 of the Lagos Coroner Law. Potential charges include unlawful medical practice and gross negligence.

In addition to the focus on the nurse, the court criticised Mohbad’s father for proceeding with a rapid and undocumented burial, and faulted his wife for delaying proper hospital care and failing to insist on autopsy procedures. These missteps, the coroner noted, undermined thorough investigation and obscured clarity around the cause of death.

Although the body’s decomposition complicated the official cause of death, pathologists agreed that the injection likely provoked a severe reaction. The coroner concluded that Mohbad’s death resulted from a medical misadventure, not natural causes or foul play.

Beyond focusing on individual culpability, the coroner’s report demanded systemic healthcare reforms: banning unlicensed personnel from administering injections, improving ambulance services, mandating full investigations of sudden deaths, and strengthening police response to pre-death petitions.

Voice of Lagos urges decisive action to prevent future tragedies: medical practitioners must be held accountable, and Nigeria’s healthcare and legal systems must ensure that negligence never threatens lives again.
