In a heartwarming display of resilience, passion, and inclusion, a Nigerian swimming coach is using his talent and personal story to empower people with disabilities, proving that water has the power to heal, unite, and inspire.

Coach Abdulmumin Salihu, based in Abuja, has become a beacon of hope for many in Nigeria’s disabled community. Despite his own hearing impairment, Abdulmumin teaches swimming to both able-bodied and physically challenged individuals, emphasizing that disability is not inability. His classes focus not just on swimming skills, but also on building confidence, self-worth, and mental strength.

“I want them to know that they are capable of doing anything,” Abdulmumin shared in an interview. “Swimming saved me. Now I want it to save others.”

His swimming classes are open to children and adults living with a range of physical challenges—from those with limb loss to individuals who use wheelchairs. Many of his students testify that learning to swim has improved their physical fitness, emotional well-being, and social confidence. For them, Abdulmumin is more than a coach—he is a role model.

The coach believes water is an equalizer. “In the water, nobody knows if you have one leg or two. You are just free,” he says with a smile. With limited resources and no major sponsorship, Abdulmumin often trains his students at local pools, sometimes covering their transportation and swimming gear himself.

Disability rights advocates and sports professionals have praised his work, calling for increased funding and awareness for inclusive sports programs across Nigeria.

As Abdulmumin continues to break barriers, his story is sending a clear message: with the right support, everyone can achieve greatness—regardless of their limitations.
