The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has embarked on a historic visit to Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling commercial capital, widely recognized as Africa’s economic powerhouse. His visit marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
Khan, who is on a tour of key global cities, arrived in Lagos to a warm reception from government officials, business leaders, and members of the British diplomatic corps. During his stay, he is expected to engage in high-level talks with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other stakeholders on climate resilience, urban planning, trade partnerships, and innovation in public transportation.
Speaking at a press conference shortly after his arrival, Mayor Khan described Lagos as a “vibrant and forward-looking city with immense potential.” He noted the parallels between London and Lagos, both being economic hubs with diverse populations and complex infrastructure needs. “Lagos represents the future of African enterprise and innovation. Strengthening our partnership is a win-win for both cities,” he said.
One of the highlights of his itinerary includes a visit to Eko Atlantic City, a symbol of Lagos’s ambitious urban transformation. Khan is also scheduled to tour tech incubators, creative industry hubs, and transportation facilities aimed at improving Lagos’s daily commuter experience.
His visit comes at a time when both cities are exploring post-Brexit and post-pandemic collaborations in areas such as green energy, education, startup investment, and public health systems. Lagos State Government has expressed enthusiasm for London’s willingness to share knowledge and technology to improve city governance.
The Mayor’s tour reflects London’s continued effort to expand its Global City Network—building stronger alliances with emerging cities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
